Our Journey to Forever

How We Met 😊

Our love story began in 2013 at Africa Nazarene University, where Faraja was a first-year student pursuing a degree in Human Resource Management, and Shaun was a charismatic third-year student studying Theology with a focus on Christian Ministries. Our paths crossed in a rather unique way through a mutual friend who used a wheelchair. Shaun often helped her navigate campus, and his kindness earned him the affectionate nickname of “dad.” It was amusing at the time, but little did Faraja know that one day, she would be calling him something far more significant. Imagine developing feelings for someone you casually referred to as “Dad” (hahaha)!

The Connection 🔗

The true connection between us blossomed later when Shaun sought out Faraja after hearing from her brother about her singing talent. I attempted to brush it off with laughter, but he was earnest: “Why are you hiding from the praise and worship team?” In reality, God had already been nudging me to join, but fear held me back. Our conversation was profound and genuine, and I felt it was God’s way of affirming His calling for me. From that day on, Shaun and I grew closer, serving together in worship, embarking on mission trips, and uplifting each other in our ministry. At one point, I even found myself acting as his “relationship counsellor” as he navigated a different relationship, but God clearly had other plans for both of us!

From Friendship to Forever 💍

As we collaborated in ministry, our friendship deepened, and my admiration for Shaun’s unwavering love for God and His people grew. By 2015, we began dating, and in 2016, we introduced each other to our families. My first visit to Zimbabwe was unforgettable; his family welcomed me with open arms and treated me to such delicious meals (I was a rather lazy eater) that I actually gained a few kilos—much to their delight! By the end of the trip, we had even booked our wedding venue, securing our future together before an official engagement (talk about being proactive, haha!).

In 2017, we exchanged vows, and since then, our eight-year journey has been a beautiful tapestry woven with God’s faithfulness, shared ministry, and the joy of walking hand in hand in His calling.

The most intriguing and humorous part of our love story is undoubtedly our engagement story! It's filled with unexpected twists and plenty of laughs. So, be sure to look out for us during our deputation, home assignments, and other gatherings. We promise it’s a tale you won’t want to miss!

Our Call To Ministry

Faraja:

My life journey, calling and milestones

Faraja

I was born into a pastor’s family, and in many ways, my faith journey began even before I entered this world. My mother often shares how, during her pregnancy with me, she would stand at the altar, balancing the weight of pastoring in my father’s absence while carrying me, praying fervently that I would serve God. Despite this legacy, I spent my childhood resisting the idea of ministry, even vowing that I would never marry a pastor. However, as I reflect on my journey, I see how God was patiently and lovingly shaping my path.

NYI at 100

Throughout my life, I often found myself drawn to Kenya through vivid visions, while simultaneously wrestling with God about feeling "too young" for the calling I sensed. Yet, through it all, He gently guided me, step by step, toward His purpose for my life.

My calling in ministry became increasingly clear during my years of study in Kenya, where God opened doors through mission trips, worship ministry, and rich cultural experiences. Even as I tried to escape the weight of ministry, God continually redirected my steps, confirming His call through opportunities, mentors, and the testimonies of my own family.

As Shaun and I discerned our shared calling as missionaries, I realised that God wasn’t asking me to conform to someone else’s vision; instead, He invited me to embrace and offer the unique gifts, skills, and passion for people He had placed within me for His mission.

Over the years, I have been blessed with milestones that affirm His call in my life. My role as a Career Development Officer at Africa Nazarene University allowed me to mentor young women and students through pivotal life decisions. Later, while working in regional personnel and mobilisation, I found immense joy in supporting missionaries—guiding them through processes, celebrating their achievements, and walking alongside them through challenges. Coordinating missionary retreats and witnessing candidates being deployed into the field have been highlights that remind me I am part of a grand narrative in God’s mission.

Today, as I serve in administrative and mobilisation roles, I consider it a privilege to play a small but significant part in what God is accomplishing across Africa. My journey continues, and I am excited to see where He leads me next.

Shaun:

A journey of Grace, Calling and Milestones

Shaun

Being the firstborn in an African family carries a unique title and the responsibility of serving as a deputy parent. But what happens when you’re the only child for 16 years, only to suddenly become a big brother to two beautiful sisters? I resonate a lot with the focus of discipleship, a journey of grace, and mine is nothing short of that.

I was born out of wedlock, but my family quickly embraced Christianity, becoming part of the Nazarene community at the dawn of the last decade before the turn of the millennium. We began attending the Nazarene Church in Waterfalls, Harare, Zimbabwe, where Rev. C. Magaya, our pastor at the time, would often ask me to read the Bible aloud during services. I relished those moments—thriving in front of an audience and feeling a deep connection with God’s people. Our congregation met under a tree every Sunday, and I cherished being part of that warm, welcoming church family.

Before I turned 12, I began attending youth gatherings, where I was affectionately dubbed the "baby" of the NYI (Nazarene Youth International). I loved that title. However, my family faced challenges, and one day, after returning from a youth camp, I discovered that my mother had left. This left me grappling with a painful question: how could a good God be present with us at youth camp, working miracles, yet not prevent my parents' marriage from falling apart? It took me 20 years to come to terms with that experience. Despite these struggles, I remained steadfast in my faith, officially accepting Jesus as my Lord and Saviour in September 1998 during a youth service.

Even before that moment, I felt a strong call to ministry, sensing that my purpose extended beyond a single location to encompass nations. At the time, I didn’t fully understand this calling, but I leaned on the wisdom of those who had come before me, trusting the Holy Spirit to guide me through the journey.

Throughout my teenage years, I served in various roles within the church, including Jesus film teams, local president of NYI, local president of NMI (Nazarene Missions International), praise and worship team leader, worship pastor, youth pastor, assistant pastor, chaplain, missions trip coordinator, sound tech leader, and many others.

As my teenage years progressed, I found myself losing my way, succumbing to alcohol and becoming involved with a gang for about two years. This period could have ended badly, but amidst the chaos, I kept hearing the Lord’s gentle whisper, reminding me that He had chosen me to come back home. When the time came, I was living with my father, who had remarried and was pastoring a church in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe. I dedicated myself to prayer and fasting from December 23, 2003, through the first week of June 2004, praying more than three times a day, often going without food except on Sunday mornings, and drinking water only three times a week. All I wanted was God—nothing else. God heard my cries, and He began to use me in powerful ways through music, preaching, praying for the sick, leading crusades, and engaging in street evangelism.

After five years of employment, I embarked on a journey to further my education and become a more effective pastor. I attended the Nazarene Bible College in Malawi and then moved to Africa Nazarene University in Nairobi, where I was later employed as a chaplain. These experiences were pivotal in solidifying my calling to missions, allowing me to immerse myself in diverse cultures. It was at Africa Nazarene University that God further directed me toward youth ministry, ultimately leading to my current role as the Africa Regional Youth Ministries Coordinator.

My life’s journey has been marked by towering mountains and deep valleys, yet through it all, I can testify to one undeniable truth, beautifully captured in the song below, The Story I'll Tell.

Our Mission

Our mission is clear: to make Christlike disciples, Matthew 28:18-20. While our strategies, locations, and personnel may evolve, the core mission remains steadfast, one that our Lord and Saviour entrusted to us. Whether we are playing football, preaching, singing, conducting crusades, drilling boreholes, offering counselling, or providing leadership training, our commitment to discipleship persists.

No matter the context or setting, our mission remains unchanged. We will leverage all of these avenues and more to make Christlike disciples. Evangelism is just one beggar telling another where to find bread. D.T. Niles.
